KS3 Curriculum Intro:

All pupils, male and female, study courses in designing, electronics, food, graphics, mechanisms, metal, plastic, problem solving, systems and control, textiles, wood. Pupils follow a carousel so that all areas of the subject are studied throughout the key stage.  Projects vary but are based on one of the following approaches to the subject:- design activities, disassembly tasks, problem solving activities, evaluative tasks, focussed practical tasks as well as Design and Make activities. All pupils have the opportunity to achieve the highest levels of attainment in this subject.

Designing and Plastics

Pupils design and make a simple artefact in plastic

Wood and Metal

Pupils are introduced to simple metal and woodworking skills by making wood and metal products


Pupils make a simple electronic device


Pupils are taught food hygiene and how to cook simple products


Pupils learn about cams, levers and mechanisms in a practical way


Pupils are taught simple sewing and textiles techniques.


Graphic design

Pupils complete a design project based on the Soma Cube


Pupils design and make an electronic fan cut using laser technology


Designing and Plastics

Pupils use smart materials to design a clock


Pupils continue to learn cooking skills by cooking soup, rice dishes, pasta dishes and simple cakes.

Systems and Control

Pupils make a computer controlled buggy and learn how to write simple control programmes


Pupils develop their sewing machines skills by designing and making novelty cushions



Pupils cook bread, desserts and simple main courses


Pupils continue to develop their  skills in designing and making electronic products



Pupils are introduced to work and professions associated with the construction industry


Pupils are taught design techniques. They then design and  make a quality product in plastic

All pupils in year 9 study a module in Sustainability and Sustainable design. This is part of the first module studied at GCSE level.
